I remember seeing these giants on the cover of Lonely Planet years ago—a distinct, skeletal silhouette that looked more like something from another planet than a terrestrial ecosystem. The Baobab trees of Madagascar have been a persistent fixture in my mind ever since, a testament to the kind of otherworldly nature that draws me to the most remote corners of the globe.
To finally stand before them at dusk was a study in stillness. In the soft, fading light, the surrounding pools acted as a perfect mirror, doubling the complexity of their ancient, sprawling branches against the darkening sky.
